The reduction in production capacity at the Argentine plant was confirmed by Stellantis to Argentine newspaper La Nación. The company said affected employees will be reassigned to other roles. Despite the cut in pickup production, Stellantis has a new engine manufacturing operation at the same industrial complex.
The production cut comes amid weaker sales. Stellantis currently builds the Fiat Titano and Ram Dakota at the Córdoba plant. Both are midsize pickup trucks currently sold exclusively in Latin America.
The Titano and Dakota are essentially the same product. Stellantis brought the pickup project from China through a partnership with Changan and adapted the model for the Latin American market.
Both pickups posted sales growth over the past year, although volumes may still have fallen short of the company’s expectations. Demand for pickup trucks is strong across the region, but competition is also intense, particularly from Ford, Toyota and Chevrolet.
Of those three rivals, Chevrolet is the only one that does not manufacture its midsize pickup in Argentina. Its S10 is instead produced in Brazil.
